‘Dons Host Milwaukee on Friday, Travel to Wright State Saturday

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Mastodons (13-32, 10-14 Horizon) play their final four Horizon League games of the season this weekend. First up the ‘Dons will host Milwaukee on Friday (May 13) in a noon doubleheader at Mastodon Field. The ‘Dons will then travel to Wright State on Saturday for a twinbill against the first-place Raiders.

The ‘Dons have a bye in league play the following weekend and will play at Akron as the rest of the Horizon League closes out the conference slate. This means this weekend will be the Mastodons’ final chance to add to their league record to qualify for the Horizon League Championship.

Scouting the Panthers: The ‘Dons took all three at Milwaukee in a Horizon League series earlier this season. Mark Connelly is hitting a team-high .311 on the season. He owns 38 hits. He is also slugging .434. Riley Frey has thrown a team-best 64.0 innings. he has 70 strikeouts.

Scouting the Raiders: Wright State took all three from the Mastodons earlier this season. In league play, Julian Greenwell is hitting a team-best .369. He is one of five Raiders hitting .300 or better in league play. Jay Luikart owns seven home runs in league play. Jake Shirk has a 1.18 WHIP and 3.25 ERA in Horizon League contests.

Sure Hands: Starting shortstop Jarrett Bickel has 48 assists and 33 putouts with only one error over the last 19 games.

Jack With The Bat: Jack Lang is hitting .469 (23-of-49) over the last 13 games with seven multi-hit games. He is 9-of-12 over the last three games.

All the way: JD Deany picked up his first career complete game on Sunday at UIC. He went the distance in the seven inning contest, allowing two runs for the ‘Dons to win 3-2. He has allowed two or fewer runs in three of his last four starts. Each have been six innings or longer.

– The Mastodons are second in the league in home runs with 44.
– The Mastodons’ 44 home runs are tied for fifth in program history for home runs in a season. The total is third in Division I era program history.
– Nine different Mastodons have a home run this season.
Jack Lang is second in the league in home runs with 10. Ben Higgins is tied for third with nine.
Jack Lang’s 10 home runs has him tied for seventh in program history for most home runs in a single season.

Record Time: The Mastodons recorded three triples in game one at Milwaukee on April 9, a new school record for triples in a game.

3 In 2 In 1!: Twice this season a Mastodon has hit three home runs in a doubleheader. Braedon Blackford hit three home runs in a doubleheader against California Baptist (Feb. 26). Cade Fitzpatrick hit three home runs in a twin bill against Youngstown State (March 20). Fitzpatrick was named one of the best hitters of March 20th by D1Baseball.com.

Miller Time: Justin Miller owns 172 strikeouts, third most in program history. In second place is Samuel Walker with 179 from 2008-11. Jason Horvath owns the program record with 210 from 2001-04.

Two in a Row: Jacob Myer was named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week on April 12 after not allowing any runs in 8.2 innings. He got the win against Michigan and Milwaukee. On April 19 Ben Higgins was named the Horizon League Batter of the Week. He went 9-of-13 (.692 batting average) with a .750 on-base percentage, 1.154 slugging percentage and a 1.904 OPS. He had two home runs, six RBIs and three runs scored.

New Faces: The 2022 Mastodon roster features 15 returners from last season and 18 newcomers.
